That’s the dilemma at the heart of Rebecca Henderson’s Reimagining Capitalism in a World on Fire.

Henderson makes the case that businesses, governments, investors, and citizens all have a role to play in creating an economy that rewards innovation while protecting the common good. Companies that invest in their workers, reduce environmental harm, strengthen communities, and think beyond the next quarter aren’t sacrificing competitiveness. Increasingly, they’re building the trust and resilience that long-term success requires.

Why it matters

One of the recurring themes in Love & Work is that every system is perfectly designed to produce the results it gets. If we want different outcomes, we have to redesign the system, not simply ask people to behave better.

Henderson applies that insight to capitalism itself.

She invites us to stop asking whether business is good or bad and start asking a more useful question: What kind of economy helps people, communities, and the living world flourish together?

That’s a question worth building toward.
