This poster was issued by the Northern Friends Peace Board (NFPB), a Quaker organization based in northern England. Founded in 1913 in response to rising militarism and the threat of war, the Board’s mission was—and still is—to encourage and support efforts for peace across Britain and beyond.
The poster is part of a historic series created to share the Quaker peace testimony with the public. Posters became one of the Board’s main tools for outreach, designed to influence opinion and spark dialogue on disarmament, pacifism, and conscientious objection, especially during World War I and other periods of global tension. The group launched its peace poster campaigns soon after its founding and continued them through much of the 20th century. Their simple design—clear fonts in bold black and red—became a recognizable hallmark, often displayed outside Quaker meeting houses.
The NFPB remains active today, helping individuals and Quaker meetings engage in “the active promotion of peace in all its height and breadth.” Its work now includes advocacy on nuclear disarmament and militarism, resources for peace education, and collaborations with other networks. Recent projects have focused on climate justice, conflict transformation, and fostering dialogue across divides.
