Encourging students to stand up for inclusivity

In 2016, Open Culture noted that a 66-year-old illustration of Superman promoting values of diversity, equity and inclusion was circulating online. They suggested, "Perhaps it’s time for an update, reflecting a more diverse America." Indeed.

The Superman, a refugee from Krypton, naturally champions tolerance toward immigrants and minorities. In 1950, he appeared on a schoolbook cover urging kids to reject discrimination:

If YOU hear anybody talk against a schoolmate because of his religion, race, or national origin—don’t wait: tell him THAT KIND OF TALK IS UN-AMERICAN.”

This message, distributed by the Institute for American Democracy (a branch of the Anti-Defamation League), encouraged students to stand up for inclusivity.

The ADL is still active today. The organization provides resources to combat anti-Semitism, racism, and bigotry.
