An independent search engine that focuses on non-commercial content

Viktor Lofgren had a crazy idea. Frustrated by the growing disappearance of valuable websites—especially those featuring non-commercial content—he set out to build a search engine from scratch. He believed that the monetization of web search through advertising had degraded search results, and he wanted to change that.

He did it. Marginalia Search was created to help users discover small, high-quality web pages often overlooked by commercial search engines. The project is open-source, with its code available under the AGPL license. Prioritizing user privacy, Marginalia Search does not share search data with third parties or retain queries or IP addresses long-term.

Viktor is the sole creator and developer of the search engine. As of this month, Marginalia Search has become his full-time job.

Try it. I like it a lot. It's already starting to become my reach-for-first search tool.
