As the federal government cuts back environmental protections, reduces climate monitoring, opens more public land to logging and mining, and weakens endangered species safeguards, a new 2025 report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) shows that 3 out of 4 people in the U.S. see nature as essential to their wellbeing.

The report is based on a national online survey of 2,000 adults in July 2025. It finds that people from both political parties feel connected to nature and believe it is vital for both personal and societal wellbeing. Most also agree that a healthy natural environment supports emotional health and is key to having safe food and clean water.

WWF says these findings offer a strong starting point for action. They can help organizations and leaders motivate people, build public support, and drive long-term change that protects both communities and the environment for future generations.

“The bounty and wonder of nature is not just astounding, it is the bedrock of our lives — from the dense rainforests of the Amazon to the peaks of the Himalayas, and the expansive Great Plains across the United States. Americans recognize that nature is at the very core of who we are and provides immense benefits to virtually every aspect of our lives: our health, our communities and our sense of joy."
